Terry and the Stray Dog Birthday Gift by Wayne Smith

One day Terry pulled up in our driveway.  He had a light blue Buick Skylark

back then.  I went out to meet him and saw that he had a German Shepherd mix

dog in the back seat.  It was about the rattiest looking stray dog I had

ever seen.  He asked me if I wanted to go for a ride.  I told him that I

didn't want to get in the same car with that nasty looking dog.

It turned out that it was a stray dog he had picked up beside the road

somewhere.  He reminded me that it was Brenda's (Arrington) birthday and he

was going to give the dog to her as her birthday present.  It was the

craziest thing I had ever heard, so naturally I jumped right in the car to

go with him.

We drove over to Brenda's house and went to the door.  Terry said he had a

gift for her birthday, but she had to come out to the car to get it.  When

we got to the car he let that awful looking dog out and told Brenda she

needed to give it a bath, feed it, and get it's shots.  She couldn't believe

it, but Terry acted like he was dead serious about expecting her to take

that dog and care for it.  Her parents had to come out and say "absolutely

not" before he put it back in the car and we drove off.  I guess he took it

back where he found it and let it go again.  That was one of the funniest

adventures we ever had together.
